Thus the Night
4
Night,
street, stoplight, drugstore.
The wind comes from far away
and vexes my words.
I don't say a thing; I am silent.
Night,
street, stoplight, drugstore.
I swallow a pill
and my illness
takes on colours.
12
I brought to art
the grey argument of youth,
the wounded glint of solitude,
thirst,
night
and the mad brushstroke.
I brought silence here,
over it the blood
and the meagre symphony of things
violated.
All of this proves that I exist.
I shifted the frontiers
of man and stone,
holding in my hands
the secret flame.
13
Poetry, in every mouth,
pride of man
and things.
Eros between two streets
that frenzy pelts.
Profound pleasure culled
from the dark world.
Poetry victorious
for itself alone, star-spangled,
waving
over all natural oblivion.
