Tim Cassidy
Beaten Track
He drives this road
so often he forgets
what it looks like,
scarcely notices
each trip differs.
He looks at the tar
and its broken line
is all he takes in till
the signals turn to green.
The road parallels
the railway tracks
on top of a dark bank.
He takes the curve
and slows to face
the gravel-rise grass
starts beneath, which
slopes the other side
to something other than
routes home. He knows
it by the distances
glimpsed above the crest,
and for an instant,
tears his eyes from
the road, makes out
the wreck, a ship
that couldn’t change
course for anything.
