Lynne Wycherley
Living by the Great North Road
All day its thunder
hung on the east wind’s tail,
fifty tons of metal in each breath
while the small coin of my face
peered with incomprehension
at its power
bright steel flashing
in strands of the sun,
enigmatic signs to The North.
What were our lives by its river?
Dragonflies? Or withies of thorn
made steady by the fields?
By night its drums were failing,
turbines thinning
through moonlit fields
while my family slept,
their faces peaceful islands
washed with snow,
as its drone climbed the darkness,
shrill and slow. Whining.
Like a homeless animal.
