Flowersong
In Xochitl in Cuicatl
Bagley Again - Exmoor
The rowan is still here athwart the stream.
Late in May up on the moor
its flowers are not yet out,
tight green umbels that will froth white
in the near future, as water singing
over and round old rocks that form its tune –
a subtle bass to many trebling birds –
froths at each little fall, ripples
into clear pools, revealing in sunlit dazzle
each stone’s separate shape and dappling red brown.
Bracken on the banks has begun uncurling
and a nearby hawthorn’s also still in bud.
From the rowan’s lichened branches
its pinnate leaves spring newly edenic,
rippling gently and outlined against
pure blue to the sea below.
Heavenly warmth after winter.
Earthwombed, I bask and belong
in this bliss where all are akin,
keep still and listen: eternal, is it?
But I hear the song is in time
and out of its bliss is born urgency.
