The Rising
Some sleeping thing
that rises, like a fawn
from bracken, half dazed
at its own liquidity ...
Did not our hearts burn
while he talked with us
on the way?
Doesn’t the movement answering
that of beauty being now,
its upleaping, antiphonal,
involuntary salute
or the slippery moment caught
when anamnesis coalesces
and cries: ‘Present!’
dispute the old philosopher’s decree
that no ‘is’ can imply an ‘ought’,
as those learning, spindly legs
totter to: ‘Here I stand’?
‘The Rising’ is dedicated to Mimi Khalvati and its first four lines are a quotation from her Entries on Light. Acknowledgment is due to Plant Care: A Festschrift for Mimi Khalvati, (Linda Lee Books, Sheffield 2004). where ‘The Rising’ was first published.
