Jim Bennett
Eastham
Charlie ran through Eastham woods today
past the Victorian Bear pit
past the fountains
past the foundations of a wooden
roller coaster
its a bit like Timeteam came
scraped the top off
left the past exposed
wrapped in the roots of trees
ready to be sniffed at
when the sun shone
later we sat
alongside Manchester Ship Canal
watched the gulls
dip and slip through
cracks in the sky
counted the planes
in and out
and smiled at pied wagtails
in front of us
the Mersey flowed
from the hills beyond Manchester
past Liverpool
and out into the Irish Sea
to mix and mix
and become part
of the waters of the world
forever
