One Day in Late Adolescence
It being suggested that I get out of myself more,
I get out of the family home and into low cloud.
A door bangs behind me and here lies North Marsh Road
and December, where the lamps have been on all day.
Adjacent, there may be a town, tidal river, power station;
but this view is cut to pavement and a Maestro browning
nicely. Also, the aged appear, trolleys pulling
them home. They breathe heavily, making their own winter.
At the crossroads I wait for a lorry dribbling sand,
then straight over past The House of Close Relations,
but I will not call being sick of myself and all others.
To the right are allotments where my father buries
something most days. Note the freshly turned earth,
hear the pigeons mumbling about the sun and spilt grain.
And now a sharp rise, up the embankment, and I look down
upon the weighty Trent, brown, see the whirlpools eating
themselves and a barge grows from the fog, slips around the bend,
bearing coal to Hull and even beyond. It disappears,
making a wake I must follow, which is where I will leave myself,
hunched and walking by a river in December,
hoping that one day I will return in human form.
