Living by the Sea
Living by the sea could mean
coming out every day
and finding out
which words could be made
to resemble the sea
and its changes
and finding not many
and there would be a digging around in language
for something
fine enough to demarcate the light
on the clouds from the light on the surface
of the sand and the surface of the sea
and language would
gradually expend itself
in the gradations of colour and be lost and sight
let everything in without description
and a body be found wandering
curving and wavering
along the shore
mumbling the primitive vowels
foaming
spitting out the consonants.
