Easy Death
In the evening, so I read,
he had stomach pains. In bed
he lay in silence, then
died in his sleep. The Cantos
were already completed, ahead
the laying out in San Giorgio Maggiore.
The gondola
carrying him to San Michele
and covered with seasonal flowers
bore a lightened body
over the water. Together with all
his misconceptions, he was laid to rest a metre
beneath the watery surface of the lagoon. There
he can now rest, to await
the judgement which will
find him guilty
or not. We know nothing except: facts
were not his concern.
