Just past the longest day, already a sagging -
the top of that broken thresher swimming into view.
The sky is merciless. The day thickens in silence.
Some kind of stifled sound: scream, moan, laugh, sob.
Flatland as far as the eye will take you.
The kitchen cat sleeping off her dawn of small murders.
