Burning in tune
to heatlines loose above the molten road,
my blistered face belonging
to a dog
dumb enough to chase
bones in a beehive.
It's a sun like this that thinned
El Greco's saints and sinners
stretched them into colours
from a fevered brush
in drowsy streets sweet with marzipan.
All once wet clay
left to spin itself into
transcendent shapes,
a city baked upon the plains
whose canvas shades
strung between the balconies
need just one breath of wind
to take us sailing down the Tagus,
souvenir swords raised high
a beast devised
by sunstroke in Quixote's eyes.
