Tarzan And His Mate
Harry tries to tempt her back with fripperies
from Paris.
She sprinkles on a little of the 'L'air du Temps' she loves
with the wing of a dove
and says, 'Woman's greatest weapon
is man's imagination.'
When the light like coconut-milk lies
in pools on leaf-litter,
they take him to see the new flower-bud on the banana -
so young and green, shaped like a sheep's
heart it looks.
He wonders at the complex somersaults
and tumbles that their tongues perform together.
Strange jungle!
At night he hears the ju-ju drums and cannot sleep.
It's only the wind, they say,
playing the bleached harps of the dead
in the elephant's graveyard.
Now she slips into ivory satin from Vionnet and parts
the branches of a tree
like curtains on a balcony
in Mayfair, leaps -
'Here, catch me!' -
curved and gleaming, the new moon
falling on its own sword and stars
straining at the leash.
