The Berbice River
she sleeping still brown sluggish
lika awee wimmin dih men dem sneer
shoving dere pepsi hats clear
off heads awash
with sun and beer
she dutty-brown thighs spread-eagle
she sanctum where she dreaming
strong sistuhs paddling silent
and vanishing
in green mist and myth
from the north bank where she toe sink
in mud crab scuttling
and through she fingers lika palm frond
from the glare
a ship suddenly appear
and hover some Martian kite
million a silver feet
pon top sea level
they steal she name for planters chairs
and made houses and promises
thinking she sleeping still
through the constant lap of lullabies
slapping at she blood let banks
soothing the simmer of currents building
rib by rib along she spine
soothing the ripple of woman rage rising
through chains, bones and gold coins
tumbling round she grave
she look like she sleeping
but she aint
