After the Quiet of Twilight
A road of poplar trees in the evening, blue shadows
devouring everything. Where the waving leaves
cast darker shadows, our footfalls press steadily
into the black pavement. On both sides of the road,
tall poplar trees rise like giants, proud sturdy limbs
reaching out, shrouding streets in their shadows.
The two of us walk deep into the evening's breast,
devouring sounds of cars, watching as a stray dog
struggles by the roadside, pants beneath a poplar,
and shuts her eyes with the sweet press of night.
