A phrase of Mozart, and the orgasm:
that they may last for ever, that is
end as soon as possible, their destiny
paradoxical as an apostate Messiah
metonymous of all existence. Tonight
we're tired, we listen to the radio;
we kiss, we read, we think, yes think
"it's as inevitable as the summoning-up
of the concept of inevitability
to explain what is not to be explained".  *

        This poem
        Or prose chopped up
        Like kosher liver
        Or like the victim
        Of the Ripper
        Is dedicated to
        One Gertrude Stein
        Or to one Janet Berg.  **

 

*   This title, like all titles, is a poetic convention, on one level. I follow a long line (sic) of poets in choosing a title without (apparent) relevance to the text in question.

**  As with titles, so with dedications. The dedicated poet often dedicates. But, note well, there is no dedication here, merely a certain playfulness with the shapely body of the text.
