their cartouches have been chiselled out
their temples dismantled
even their bodies have disappeared
we begin by whispering
within different walls
lest we forget
in places where the king
the latest iconoclast
overlooked to search
we gather up the broken
statuettes like relics
and conceal them
all over the shattered city
perhaps the stones will hold
the memory of our syllables
how tongues will stumble naming them
hatshepsut
nefertiti
our saving grace
