Chris Riley
Stevington Windmill
is where we walked the dogs on Sunday,
the first journey we shared when
we dreamed of buying a derelict cottage
in sight of the mill.
We explored the ruin while
he explained how broken panes can be replaced,
crumbling walls shored up.
I saw the kitchen’s potential,
was sure thick carpet could soften creaky stairs.
The March wind blew the mill sails gently,
as we threw sticks for the dogs.
Returning later, we let them roam
while I gathered blackberries for preserving.
The cottage was still empty:
inviting shelter there,
we kissed until I could not see
the sails turning,
only feel cold walls against my back,
his warmth on my face,
and the sails still turned.
Now the dogs have gone, the cottage burned,
Stevington Mill’s sails turn.
