Jenny Hockey
Time before work
Eyes stuck up. A bit. Just wet bell curves across the windows.
And the water, ceaseless between its banks. In sight above the
sill.
Hand into towelling glove. French soap spread over strong limbs.
Someone else’s body in mind. Somebody’s longing. Simply for this.
Caffeine surge to the head and ease in the gut. A settling
down into lamplight. Porridge and news and precious little
concentration. Distraction.
Strain at the back of each leg and heat from nowhere under the
belted mack. Carloads crawl by. They see little. A lone figure
bent to the hill. No-one at her side. It would seem.
Flight or fright at the last leg. Nothing in the bag but hope
and a downhill run to corridors empty of faces. A keyhole, a
password, a pause.
