Christine Webb
Journeyman
Packing up chisels, planes, neat as a surgeon,
he leaves his lit bench in the roaring workshop
(where the bandsaw once caught up Lije Jackson
and stripped him of everything but his boots
dropping him to bleed to death in the shavings)
and sets out, savouring the quiet night,
under the swaying shadows of streetlamps
pedal by pedal, over the boundary bridge
the wind clearing the sawdust from his nostrils
his brain still absorbed in the geometry
of staircases, until he reaches the street,
the fence, the kerb (swinging his leg over
the crossbar), the back door’s blurred panel
(tapping the woodcurls out of his turn-ups)
the bacon-scented kitchen, my mother’s kiss.
