The Unknown
I was too young not to cope. Besides which
there was still a fight between us.
So I toughed it out, the dutiful son
shouldering your dead weight and my mother’s grief.
I’ve wanted answers since, found myself
imagining a quiet walk with you round the garden
while your throwaway asides and puzzled brow
explained you didn’t have them.
By the time I recognised you in the mirror
it was too late. I’d already dealt with marriage,
children, divorce, redundancy,
and the frantic lapses of a mid-life crisis.
Then I had your heart attack, at the age you were
when you had your father’s. Three years on
there’s no memory of you at the stage I’ve got to now.
You snuffed it. God knows what happens next.
