the don juan papers
lord john looks out
Past his bare shoulder
an area of slate gables
lichened, correct
A seagull wheeled
One hardly moving cloud
Perhaps the same vermilion one
that hangs above the darkening elm
Strict view of roofs, strained winter sky,
an alien afternoon
Trapped, his embrace protecting
a memory of need
Short-sighted eyes that furtively
longed for release
Before arrival, in
intricacies of love, a marvel, if
afterwards with age
increasing disappointment, tact
required to disentangle the spent limbs
The mirror catches my grey hair, his blond,
each time we clasp
It all must end
I kissed him rose moved to the window stretched
stood naked for a moment looking out
shivering
picked up my glasses dressed and left
already now hours later
wanting it again
