No need to put your magazine away
If there’s an article you want to read.
I could just sit and look at you all day.
Were you about to speak to me? No need.
My minimum is very bare indeed.
I’m happy eating breakfast on my own,
Knowing that you are in a room nearby,
Not quite asleep. I’m happy to postpone
Thought and decision, question and reply
For now, since I am neither home nor dry.
You want to stir your drink? I’ll fetch a spoon.
I’ll wear my heels down looking at the sights -
It’s educational. We’re leaving soon.
I watch the pattern form. I may have rights
But no time has been set aside for fights.
Soon I’ll be in my favourite service station
(Well-named, because it is a welcome break),
Eating a slice of sickly Fudge Temptation
As usual. With such a lot at stake
It’s comforting to recognise a cake.
