Helen Kitson
Friday Night
This one's a blast from the past,
he dedicates it to the ladies,
winks when he asks if anyone
is old enough to remember the sixties.
His girlfriend gets up to dance,
wiggles her hips, mouths the words.
We stare at our glasses,
fiddle with the sticky stems.
We think it's all a bit tacky,
only Karaoke or a pub quiz
would be worse.
"I'll finish with a rock number,
a Dire Straits tune". All the dancers
sit down, this one's a bit too modern,
something for the young ones.
"Buffet out the back!" the landlady shouts,
tripping on her high-heeled sandals.
We leave the pub before closing time;
buy greasy chips, cheap beer.
