Dennis Onions
Winter River
The river is brim-full
and rising.
Above it is a sky of hammered pewter
except for where
the sun would be
and that’s
a ragged patch
of polished brass.
Upcurrents crease the surface
shown up sharp
by the low angle
of what light there is.
Out there
where the flow is fastest
the water could be some strange
relative of mercury.
On the bank
you can see its nature,
thin and clear with fine dust
swirling or forming
a filmy scum at the slowly
outward-creeping edge
as it finds another footprint to fill.
