Anyone Left Standing
She never did like apples, because of her teeth.
The top ones didn’t fit properly after the operation.
Double Murder is her favourite ice cream;
two chocolate flakes. Pleased she can eat it.
Same with the wheelchair. At this level she says
you notice new buds and night-scented stock.
On our first wheeled outing
22 kids from the local special school are also pushed to the park.
Everyone waves and anyone left standing looks odd.
She was kneeling in front of the record player when her leg went.
Now in the photos she shows me, my mother floats on clouds;
with her bad eye and shaky hands, all images double-exposed.
Her sitting on the patio, the high rise drifting behind.
A neighbour twenty foot up. Smells better up there.
