Huntingdonshire Nocturne
Is there a gauge in San Francisco to measure the effects
of acid rain in Huntingdonshire ? I'm told there is a seismograph
at Tilbrook Grange that's monitoring the San Andreas Fault !
Not earthquake territory, you'd have thought. Though once I was sitting
silent, pharaoh-like, a hand on each rest of my armchair,
when I felt what I thought was a gust of wind lifting the carpet,
except that the air was still and the carpet was stapled down.
The epicentre, I found out later, was in Peterborough.
A natural disaster it wasn't. And generally we're so safe
it's obscene. Tsunami, volcano, forest fire cross our screen
night after night, while here the sea yawns, and puts in
its annual claim for Whittlesey Mere. But we live where
safety helmets are mandatory for a spin round Grafham Water,
past the tons of chlorine in the water treatment works,
into the woods where they found a hoard of mustard gas,
across the stable clay, ideal for disposing of plutonium.
