Raymond Friel’s collections include Bel-Air (1993) and Seeing the River (1995). His poem Confiteor was published in a limited edition in 1997. He co-founded the literary review Southfields with Richard Price in 1994 and collaborated with Price on the joint collection Renfrewshire in Old Photographs, published in 2000 by Mariscat. A World Fit to Live in is his first publication since then.
From the autobiographical poems of early life, to those dealing with love, family, and industrial decline, again and again Friel charts disenchantment, futility, loss, tension and insecurity, whether in his own immediate experience, or in that of those close to or round about him. It is a testimony to his skill and honesty as a writer that he manages this with much good humour and without rancour or bitterness.
Douglas Lipton, Lines Review
Raymond Friel is the kind of energetic poet who can find subject matter in anything, and with some audacity he turns it into poems for us.
Rennie Parker, PN Review
