Rana Dasgupta. Tokyo Cancelled.
HarperCollins, Price 395, Pages 383, ISBN 81-7223-472-4
In Tokyo Cancelled, thirteen passengers are stranded in an airport as Tokyo their destination is covered in snow and all flights are cancelled. What follows, quite unlike what one sees in contemporary English writing, is a textured and multi-layered unfolding of stories — both interior and exterior — psychological and emotional, bridging a diverse cast of characters, professions, aspirations, dreams, and disappointments. Rana Dasgupta is a very fine prose stylist, a clever inter-weaver of stories and sub-stories, an adroit sculptor of characters. He is one young writer I was very pleased to discover and look forward to his new work anxiously. I am sure we will hear a lot more from him in the near future. A truly exceptional talent.
