From “Letters to Ted”
Alexandra House was the place to be seen in
[“Fidelity” - Birthday Letters]
It was like a measureless cavern, a temple,
with an altar in the centre, the Gaggia machine,
or was this before such contraptions?--
certainly, as you noted, it was before coffee-houses.
I experience again the excitement and the horror.
But the ambulant silhouettes are monochrome blanks.
I see bare floorboards and myself coming
across them,
all eyes or none on me...
A whole world is stirring, with music, talk.
And beyond that, Cambridge itself,
and England. And beyond that,
the narrow seas and Europe. And
beyond that, the ocean and...
well, America, as it turned out --
for both of us.
