Lovely Day
Vanishing,
bobbing up,
vanishing,
north of the Buoy,
The Supreme dips and disappears in Beadnell bay,
Dark speck among mountainous seas of molten silver.
‘Ye’ve missed your chance, now, Eddie. Lie where y’ are.’
John’s on the pier, on the wireless, winding him in.
‘Now! Put some speed on!’ She surges ahead. From behind,
A huge bruise-livid roller – ‘Whoa! Eddie!’ – catches her stern
And heaves her –
Yawing,
See-sawing –
Towards the sun.
Down she slides, backwards, afloat still; the sea rolls on.
‘Now, gan! Haa’d north a bit. Norrard.’ Eddie turns her
Head to the pier, as the next surge carries her, riding –
Up, forward,
Momentarily surfing –
Subsiding.
And suddenly she is through it, into flat water
And a pool of sun; and milky behind her
The shaken sea, the shock of the breaking waves.
On the pier, a woman walking her terrier, smiles:
‘Hello John –
Lovely day!’
