**HOROSCOPE
Eve rules today
flirting with evil
Circe in shadow
consorts with the devil
Medusa, Medea
if they prevail
Helen, Eleanor
cower, bewail while
Sheba, Salome
seductively win
Lucrezia Borgia
does us all in
Bridget gives comfort
Kali gives pain
Lily O'Grady*
saunters in vain
Pandora, Cassandra
bearers of doom
Juliet, Cleopatra
resigned to the tomb
out of Africa, Yansa
posing and mocking
drives men to despair
and priests to unfrocking
Decade by decade
advancing, receding
our faces emerge through
our birth and our breeding
Though stridently uniform now
sheathed to excel
or trousered like men
we never can tell
what tumultuous strivings
lie in our breast from
our feminine forebears
who take us in jest
FITFULLY!
*Lily O'Grady is a character in Edith Sitwell's Facade set of poems.
'Lily O'Grady silly and shady,
sauntered along like a lazy lady'
