Love of One's Neighbour
To Jean Rousselot
Who has seen the toad crossing a street? It’s a very small man: a doll is not tinier. He drags hinself along on his knees: one would say he was ashamed...? No! He is suffering from rheumatism. One leg gets left behind, he pulls it forward. Where is he going like this? He comes out of the gutter, the poor clown. No one has noticed the toad in the street. In the past no one noticed me in the street; now the children mock my yellow star. Lucky toad! You have no yellow star.
