Girl in the Gallery: Porthmeor
Suave, mari magno turbantibus aequora ventis,
Et terra magnum alterius spectare laborem.
“Lovely it is, when the winds are churning up the waves on the
great sea,
to gaze out from the land on the great efforts of someone else.”
Lucretius, De Rerum Natura
I found you
Facing the viewer’s uncomfortable stare
Found you
Your back to the landcapes, consciously unaware
Found you
Where I’d come for Karl Weschke, looking away
Found you
Wandering other worlds beyond the brimming bay
Found you
Egyptian cat goddess, serene in the fall of light
Found you
Poised in black, legs crossed, hands white
Found you
Chromatic against the painter’s duns and greys
Found you
Untroubled by the tumult of his ways
Found you
In love with sky, windy and sapphire bright
Found you
Across spindrift and surf, tracing the seabirds’ flight
I found you
Witness to that loveliness survives
Among saints and painters at St Ives.
