Peter Monacell
At the Interface
Left wanting for words, Peter logs on,
and the computing station receives him
with absolute grace. Its vinyl keyboard knocks
like a rosary chain. He enters confession
in the cursory field and tries to envision,
apart from exteriors, apart from his mind,
some third categorical space—a region defined
by 0 and 1, the material terms of his search.
Then hardcore pornography rushes into the void.
Then some film titles, song lyrics, churches.
Then Augustine, de Quincey, Tolstoy, Freud,
the several postwar poets known to “confess,”
a whole vocabulary ordered up
to generate a source from sourcelessness.
