from Café Sonnets - (i) Essex River
The one on Essex River was less a café
than a Clambake, but I still had that feeling you get,
of content, as Dave explained salt water taffy
and Gail why she’s not into Jane Austen yet.
By the time we’d finished, the mist was coming down,
so the scene was all horizontals, blocks
of shade schussing the car back into town,
us inside like waders dipping in flocks.
It’s always the same. I sort of discorporate,
storing visuals, mostly, in cellophane,
or onto removable discs, but deliberate,
intending to forget and then remember again.
There will be wars, and rumours of wars, we’ll stop
writing, but begin again when the penny drops.
