World Famous Lava Poem
(for Gemma)
The television shows
The glow-worm tentacles of lava
A spidery and heaving flow
Splayed patulous
On the hillside
An intricate mosaic
Jostling for prominence
Leaving the old trees crushed
Though they reeked of permanence
And these patterns will remain etched
Where trees have crashed
Or embossed
Solid on the face
And a little girl says
“You should write a poem about lava
And volcanoes”.
