Miracle
It started Saturday evening. I’d never seen
the queue outside the newsagent’s so long,
both the home teams had gone and won.
The men drank the pubs dry by ten.
Monday, they came home from work with flowers,
apologised for the last twenty years,
then fell to tasks about the house.
This time the pubs ran out of half-pint
glasses and lime cordial.
It was the following Sunday that capped it:
the church packed, the collection plate
piled high with bits of lead the rogues
brought back. The dregs of wine
were somehow made to stretch.
And people spoke to other people,
not thinking how to pick their pockets,
went home to find the house untouched.
Thought nothing of it.
