Oxalis
Into the antique terraces
beside the snaking road,
the sherbet trail penetrates
deeper and deeper.
The hoar gnarl of the olives
seems to writhe
above the smile after smile
of simple discs and shamrocks.
Sexless masses with guileless eyes,
pushing into old parchment;
speckling the carob grounds
in denser, denser swarms.
Turning with bland trust sunwards
and crowding every inch of light,
the nodding, smiling multitude
drown toiling mint and aconite.
Wherever there is sun!
Wherever there is soil!
