Sprightly they go in casuistry
(argument set-aside one more day)
Montana into Wyoming dreams
Idaho also, teem before the snow
gleams, indifferent of identity
dull days full of haze and grays.
Coyote lean a-slope seeming
slim as stoat, droll as tall troll
strolls fall-in-willow-shadow pebble-
shoal half-wolf without his bulk
sulky doggedness or sullen lope;
or doubled-up fox, as sharp a nose,
hope-fear steers route scent disposes;
Elk already down and belling, show.
Moose move marsh alongside its floor
widening for fall-roar yet to come, before;
cottonwoods’ awning, barriers to its own corridor
river delivers their road, grown-hollow-way
parallels buffalo-road, beaver-detailed course;
sunk to their great hulk little shows, subsides,
and what does glows green algal blooms hides ...
Coyote gleans deermice, meadow vole, crisp
their woodrush fruits, gramma-seeds. Reeds whisper
where deer has been, tell bear, bend scent
meant more than transmitted, as with us:
doves also give game away. Tropes go away;
we are too slow to know, yes, as yet
aspects of sense we have only just met.
