Starting the Night-Shift
19/20 Oct 2000, for M.H.
Dusk weasel, gone to bed after Kestrel
both after Starlings bushed, uselessly
whistle of wigeon over
under Mars, Saturn rising under Jupiter
(Orion not yet up over horizon)
Eighteen blackcock to roost, where they lekked
“lookin’ for their likin” on same urges
flown-in from their Leadgate road herb-verges
whimpers the dog-marten toward ‘en corralling,
forward at an easy, not a dog, trot, silhouette
Eighteen blackcock in a loose circlet of jet,
lyre-tails lean inward - no white show, give away,
no white also my facing them, not the moon’s yet
light seeks these high sikes from the west
red-coral while sunset delays over Solway.
