Finishing Touch
(Alvar Aalto, 1898-1976)
On that Sunday
the architect was there to watch
the congregation’s first immersion in his pool
of colours. He’d selected richest pigments
for the frescoes and the glass:
they had chosen mostly sober clothing
and dropped in place
before the altar stiffly as
piano hammers practising familiar scales.
Then a single umber overcoat
among the greys and herringbones
fell exactly where his hope was pointing
straight below
the vertex of the birchwood crucifix.
Then he could tell himself he heard a flourish fading
down the long connecting corridor
another master builder used
to slip in unannounced and place the keystone.
