Spring
Hedges are peppering with crumples of leaf
anaemic yet but bursting with excitement to be here
and to be first among clones still encased
in overstretched Lycra-tight wombs.
Up there the water is prattling
down fells and mountainsides. Same water.
Same hard and stony beds. Same genes.
New eyes that needed no mutation.
Memory shared. Some would name it collective.
Winter dormant
but not idle in its dormancy.
It has dreamed but has not only dreamed.
Eggs are hatching in the hedgerows.
Soon newborns’ eyes will be widening
Their angle of sight.
