Early Critical Works
An all day rain day reaches four o’clock.
I gaze out to the lawn. My three year old
is occupied daubing fiery vermilion
on a steady supply of my old poems
in which love fails, graffiti disfigures
the playground, the powerless
voice their dramatic monologues
and feel no better for it.
He starts on the backs but soon dismisses
any distinctions my vanity might propose.
Drizzle anoints the creosoted fence -
I bore myself thinking it needs another coat.
He’s moved on to crocus yellow,
but amid my foggy colours
even the lawn’s lustre is a grey shade
around which words begin to cluster.
