dream

almost two years
looking through the attic window
from Sharrow Mount green hills in mist
the redbrick of Jessop Hospital and University-

almost two years
and sleeping with another woman in my arms
I dreamt of you again a sense of the macabre
for you'd not really died at all
had only feigned it in that black box-

-you've got your freedom now-she said-
to write and notch your maroon belt-
dry-eyed and with sardonic wit-

almost two years
has sorrow gone, and grief
has it transmuted into irony
the gold into clay and into shit?
To survive the alchemy has got to work-

If I were to ask -what do you think
this is where we're at- I could only catalogue
        the facts
we've bought a terrace-house, I'm teaching still
and still act upon absurd impulses
michi's slow at school but learns to swim
jane can draw and paint, patrick's irrepressible
-I kissed the sun and now it's dancing in the sky-
