Anger
I’d never seen such anger,
such red-mouthed clawing anger, such
(Really that’s not quite true:
there was a moment when a comrade-soldier,
empurpled, screaming, shot the man clinging to the tree)...
But that’s all gone. As I say, there was anger
yesterday on the golf-course, in the sun.
The blows teemed down upon the trolley.
I’d never seen a fury like
(But then, as you know, I had.
The man, hit several times, fell slowly,
branch by branch, and met the ground
in a soft and yielding flop)...
There I go. I was talking about that trolley.
It stood up well against the blows, buckled slightly
then rolled away, slow, pursued.
I never knew the reason for the rage
on that occasion either, scuttled away.
But people do, you know - scuttle away.
