Where the Poet lives
Picture the passionate and imperious poet –
His arms embrace the rivers of Siberia
his hot blood runs from Ruwenzori, Abyssinia and Khartoum,
his soul was born not far from old Jerusalem,
his lucid mind wakes every morning in Tuscany, Oxford or Davos,
his ethics are New England, his morals California,
his feet stretch out from Alice Springs to Patagonia.
Across the silent oceans his wild voice echoes –
he runs his fingers through his long dark hair,
black as a biblical raven.
With a furious clenched fist
he punches the innocent air –
not thankfully, nor humbly,
and waving good night to his friends at the Writer’s Circle,
he retreats quietly
to a semi-detached three-bedroomed house,
somewhere north of Wembley.
