Awakening
After a pint or two of Shires
the gas man is asleep in his van
on the common. The sun is hot on his face,
his feet are on the dashboard.
He dreams himself into a garden
with that lovely girl who does the weather
in figure-hugging turquoise... but his wife
is tip-tapping down the garden path towards them.
The tapping gets into his ear, like an earwig,
and he opens his eyes to a blurred face
outside the glass. It is Mrs Boiler-Problem
of Fifteen Park Drive.
Flakes of ash are clinging to her hair
and in the sooty darkness of her face her eyes
are red and mad. She is mouthing words
no decent man wants to hear from a woman.
