Through many lands and over many a sea
I’ve come to pay my last respects, oh brother,
to give you one last present at your death
and natter vainly to your silent ashes
since such misfortune took away your breath,
oh brother cruelly lost alas to me.
But in the meantime show me some forbearance,
accept these gifts tear-soaked with many splashes,
such gifts as are time-honoured by our parents
and now hail and farewell forever, brother.
