Not Knowing Itself by Marita Over
ISBN 1 904852 12 2
Marita Over's second collection comes nine years after her first (Frogmore) collection, Other Lilies, but proves to be well worth the wait. The sequence of fifteen sonnets consistently impresses with an intimacy that is never forced, but there is much else to admire here. 'Lines after Wang Wei' is immensely moving: there may be only sixteen of them, but each is finely wrought and the poem concludes poignantly: 'and your silence now, as often on the phone,/ so hard to listen to.'
