Clive Eastwood
Amphibious
The frog
was twice as long
dead as alive.
It stretched as I pulled
until it seemed
the skin would tear
stretched
until it was as thin
as the iris stem
to which its front legs clung.
Its small bones
were taut as glass fibres
down its back
the wasted thighs
the closed fan
of each foot.
It grasped the stem
in a rigor
that said
it would not allow itself
to slip
under the surface
it would not
drown.
Patches of sky-blue
stippled
over all its body.
Its skin was slippery
to grip. It stared
nerveless
translucent
unable to let go,
however long.
